Writing-intensive courses represent a wonderful opportunity to teach students the writing and thinking skills that are specific to a particular discipline, as well as to help them improve their writing for broader purposes. Organizing such a course can be challenging, however, as it requires balancing instruction in content knowledge with instruction in effective writing. In this session, Kathy will discuss how her upper-division, writing-intensive course Biology 3191 has evolved to meet each of these goals. She will also suggest specific uses for technology, such as the SMART Board, in writing-intensive courses.
