During this session, the presenters will reflect on new opportunities in teaching, including the use of technology and an increasing emphasis on collaborative and active learning. Derek will discuss how digital sources and course-management systems such as Telesis have revolutionized how we think about and present material to students. He will comment, in particular, on how these new technologies have enabled historians to move away from the linear model of the traditional lecture and to expose students to disparate, but interconnected, sources. Sarah will discuss the recent development of her upper-level Biology laboratory course in genomics. She will reflect on the use of a growing set of databases and computer-based analytical tools that provide unprecedented opportunities for all investigators—from high school students to professors—to work on current research problems and thus to contribute to the construction of knowledge in the field.
